Designing a barn biosecurity plan that works

A disease outbreak can shut down your barn, harm horses, and create liability issues. Yet many facilities rely on informal habits rather than a written plan. Biosecurity isn't one-size-fits-all; it should be customized for each facility to consider all aspects that can affect horse health, according to the Equine Disease Communication Center. A practical plan reduces risk and demonstrates due diligence. Here’s how to build one that works for your operation.

Start with a written plan and a risk assessment

A written plan is your foundation. It should cover daily sanitation duties, weekly deep-clean tasks, trailer cleaning schedules, and quarantine protocols, as recommended by UGA Extension. Begin by mapping your facility: identify high-traffic areas, horse groupings, and potential entry points for pathogens. Consider your horses’ activities—showing, trailering, breeding—and your local disease risks. Check the Equine Disease Communication Center for current alerts in your area.

Quarantine: your first line of defense

Quarantine is non-negotiable. New arrivals, returning horses, and any horse showing signs of illness should be isolated.   • House the horse in a separate stall or paddock, as far from the resident herd as possible.

Cleaning and disinfection: do it right

Cleaning and disinfecting are not the same. Cleaning removes organic material—manure, bedding, dirt—which inactivates most disinfectants. Disinfecting kills pathogens after cleaning. A disinfectant applied to a dirty surface may lose over 90% of its effectiveness, notes UGA Extension. Follow these steps:

  1. Remove all organic matter from surfaces.
  2. Wash with detergent and water.
  3. Rinse and allow to dry.
  4. Apply an appropriate disinfectant, following manufacturer’s directions for concentration and contact time.

Choose disinfectants based on the pathogen. Accelerated hydrogen peroxide (AHP) works well in dirty environments, while bleach (sodium hypochlorite) requires a clean, dry surface and a 10-minute contact time. Never mix bleach with ammonia or acids—toxic gases result. For stalls, use smooth, non-porous materials that are easier to disinfect.

Access management and daily routines

Control who and what enters your barn. Keep a visitor log with contact information, and restrict access to essential personnel. Designate separate equipment for feeding and waste removal, and provide each horse with its own buckets, halters, and brushes. Enhance air circulation with fans and open windows, and consider solid stall walls or empty stalls between horses to prevent direct contact, as recommended by Colorado State University.

Train your team and review regularly

A plan only works if everyone follows it. Train all staff and boarders on biosecurity protocols, including hand washing, boot cleaning, and recognizing signs of disease. Post educational posters around the barn. Review and update your plan at least annually, or after any incident, to incorporate lessons learned, as advised by the AAEP.
